Bitcoin hit a new all-time high in January 2025, experiencing a maximum drawdown of $36,000. Remarkably, it took just three months for Bitcoin to recover. During this period, it showed more resilience than equities did. In contrast, altcoins have yet to make significant gains. 

 remains unchallenged in this market cycle. The main factor driving this trend is clear: institutional investors are increasingly investing in cryptocurrency, and Bitcoin is the primary beneficiary of this shift.

Bitcoin production is approximately 400 units daily, totaling around 36,000 units quarterly. In Q1 2025, Strategy alone acquired 81,875 units.

Since November 2024, the AUM of Spot Bitcoin ETFs has increased from $56 billion to $134 billion, equivalent to 780,000 units of additional spot Bitcoin purchase, assuming $100,000 per unit, suggesting 300,000 units per quarter.

Despite recent 13F disclosures that present a mixed picture: whereas the State of Wisconsin Investment Board (SWIB) sold its 3,400 BTC-equivalent holdings in BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (NASDAQ: IBIT), the Mubadala Investment Company of Abu Dhabi increased its holdings in IBIT from 4,700 to 5,000 BTC-equivalent.

Combining the additions from Spot Bitcoin ETFs and Strategy, we can clearly see that new production of Bitcoin can’t keep up with the demand, so that established Bitcoin holders have to give up their existing positions to new investors. What’s more, we haven’t yet counted the purchase of Bitcoin by Metaplanet or Semler Scientific, and more companies are expected to follow suit.

Nonetheless, we’ve seen most Bitcoin HODLers continue to hold, meaning existing investors tend not to sell their Bitcoin holdings — which puts pressure (known as a liquidity squeeze) on the liquidity supply of Bitcoin. 

Although Bitcoin’s scarcity has propelled it toward a new high, macro factors still matter. Despite its status as 

, in our view, Bitcoin remains a risky asset because it doesn’t generate cash flows as other equities do.

The US and China formally announced a 90-day reduction in tariff rates, with levies on Chinese goods falling to 30%. Negotiating a trade deal with China (arguably the most challenging negotiation on the US’s docket) resulted in a sustained period of renewed optimism that both Wall Street and crypto markets could benefit from. During that period, we saw a material shift in sentiment in Bitcoin’s derivatives market.

A Standard Chartered analyst predicts that the price of each Bitcoin unit will reach $120,000 by 2025. Several other analysts predict $200,000-per-unit BTC within 2025.

Bybit predicts a medium target of around $150,000, referencing the drawdown from the 2024 cycle.

For a long-term investor, it’s more fundamental to focus on the five-year target. 

 predicts a target of $300,000 by 2025. That said, it’s beneficial to take note of gold’s $22.5 trillion market cap. If Bitcoin had the same market capitalization as gold, it would be worth approximately $1 million per unit. In five years, even if it only matches half of gold’s market cap, Bitcoin’s target price will be $500,000.

Ether’s outperformance doesnt suggest an altcoin season coming

Historically, crypto cycles start with Bitcoin reclaiming its all-time high, leading to a euphoric phase before a major crash. Capital then rotates from Bitcoin into Ethereum and other large-cap assets, usually about 200 days after a Bitcoin halving.

In early May 2025, we saw initial signs of euphoria, but Ethereum's rally has not achieved the market-cap dominance of previous cycles. Despite a recent 60% price increase, ETH is still nearly 50% below its 2021 peak and comprises only 9% of the total crypto market.

The recent uptick in ETH dominance coincides with a slight decline in Bitcoin dominance. However, drops of 5-7.2 percentage points are insufficient to signal an altseason, as historical declines typically range from 30-50 points. Therefore, we are not yet in a full altseason.

What sets Pectra apart is that ETH experienced a stronger rally post-upgrade, following a significant downturn in price. However, options market data complicates the narrative; the increase in implied volatility for ETH options indicates that traders were reacting to broader macroeconomic changes rather than just the upgrade itself. Notably, the volatility for short-term options surged after Pectra’s rollout, highlighting that market sentiment shifted in response to external factors.

Ethereum's rally beginning May 8, 2025, was not solely due to the Pectra upgrade; it coincided with President Trump's announcement of a trade deal with the UK, triggering risk-on sentiment in US equity and crypto markets. This shift was evident in ETH’s derivatives markets, where the 30-day futures implied yield surged above 15%, indicating strong demand for long positions. Notably, this bullishness stemmed from improving macro conditions rather than anticipation of Pectra.

Perpetual swap funding rates for ETH also stabilized above spot prices, reflecting robust demand for leveraged positions. USDC is a stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar, backed by U.S. dollars held in reserve. The white paper for the USDC stablecoin says that it was developed for beginners who want to enter the world of cryptocurrencies safely and without high costs. 

The governments of different countries often resort to a method called quantitative easing, or QE, which implies the issuance of a new supply of money by central banks globally. Acting in this way, they take politically motivated measures to reach certain goals and save certain beneficiaries from collapse, which would harm the economy. QE can, however, cause a range of undesirable consequences, such as inflation or deflation, as well as create favorable conditions for the crypto revolution that’s currently forming the global financial landscape. 

All these changes are actively supported by tech-savvy users, throughout the world, who have become active participants of the cryptocurrency ecosystem. In September 2018, Circle announced the release of a fiat-backed stablecoin, USDC. Previously, Gemini and 

 had already announced stablecoins developed by their platforms. Circle designed USDC in cooperation with BITMAIN, a leading Bitcoin hardware mining manufacturer. It’s worth noting that BITMAIN 

 conducted by Circle in May 2018. The company presented USDC as a more regulated alternative to other cryptocurrencies.

In October 2018, USDC became the first stablecoin that was listed on the then-biggest trading platform, Coinbase. Circle and Coinbase then formed a joint venture known as the Centre Consortium to develop the underlying technology of USDC and to govern it.

USDC was listed on Coinbase in October 2018, and in November 2018, Binance added it to its listing, helping to bootstrap the liquidity of the stablecoin quickly. The popularity of the USD crypto coin increased even more after it became available for trading in over 80 countries. 

This explosive growth followed amidst the reality of the coronavirus pandemic, when people started using USDC as a 

 against fiat currencies. In addition, the development of the decentralized finance (

) sector helped to drive a massive amount of traffic to USDC. Innovative features such as 

 contributed to its growing popularity. This stablecoin has become one of the leading digital assets, with amounts deposited on different DeFi platforms. By 2021, the

In August 2022, Bybit announced its partnership with Circle to promote the use and growth of USDC by providing users with a range of USDC products, such as

USDC has been witnessing a notable surge in popularity, reflecting a significant shift in stablecoin market dynamics. Despite Tether's USDT holding a dominant position, with a 70% market share and a market cap of $114 billion, USDC has made impressive gains, increasing its market share by 37% since the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB).

The recovery of USDC is particularly notable, given its strong rebound post-SVB collapse as it experienced a temporary dip in market capitalization from $48 billion to $24 billion in 2023. However, in 2024, USDC's market cap has climbed to $34 billion, buoyed by a broad increase in trading volumes — from $9 billion in 2023 to $23 billion in 2024. This recovery was supported as USDC became the first stablecoin to comply with the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulations, which has significantly enhanced its appeal for institutional investors and in regulated markets.

Furthermore, compliance with MiCA has positioned USDC favorably against other stablecoins, especially in European markets, where regulatory compliance is highly valued. This alignment with regulatory standards has contributed to USDC capturing 95% of large transaction volumes, indicating a strong preference among large-scale investors and institutions for regulated stablecoins.

On Feb 25, 2025, it was announced that the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA) has officially recognized and regulated Circle’s stablecoins, USDC and EURC, allowing them to be integrated into financial institutions and fintech services within the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). This milestone strengthens Circle’s position as a leading global stablecoin issuer, already compliant with EU MiCA regulations and Canada’s new listing rules. The approval expands access to USDC and EURC for over 6,000 companies in Dubai, enabling the use of these stablecoins in digital payments, trading and treasury management. 

Overall, the stablecoin market is continuing to grow, with a total market cap reaching
